“We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” is about breaking up with someone and trying to get over them a lá Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind. The movie portrays a couple erasing memories of each other as they go through several heartbreaks.
The movie is a heavy inspiration for the album as well as the universe. In a teaser for the song’s music video, Ariana reads a disclosure form. “You’re aware that all belongings related to this memory will be disposed of indefinitely and will be irrecoverable in accordance with the medical facilities standards,” it read. “You have given extensive thought behind your decision and give ‘Brighter Days Inc.’ the exclusive permission to remove this person completely from your memory.” She signs her name as “Peaches” on the contract line
Ariana talked to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about how she loves the movie. “I think the movie is so beloved because so many people can relate to knowing that something isn’t right, but loving so much, and wanting to stay, and wanting to figure it out, and that cycle that can happen in the film. I think that’s why the film is so beloved. It’s because so many people can relate to it, and I think it kind of fell into place that these songs had little tidbits of that theme. I just felt really inspired by it.”
Lowe called the track, a “classic, emotive dance floor moment.” She described that the concept applies to her “in a different way for me than it does for most of my friends and most of my family and people who have listened they all sort of interpret it a little bit differently which I love about that song because I think it can be applied to any kind of relationship. She explained that the music video is “is the album in a video.”

Many fans believe that “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” might be about her ex-husband Dalton Gomez.
TMZreported that Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez were divorcing in July 2023. According to sources, the coupe just couldn’t make it work post-COVID and the level of Grande’s fame wasn’t something Gomez was at all prepared for. “When Covid restrictions lifted, we’re told their differences became alarmingly apparent. Dalton, an L.A. realtor, was taken aback by Ariana’s celebrity.
