Even with ideal traffic, the drive from LA to Las Vegas is over four hours, and much of it is through empty desert without many amenities. Be sure that your car is in good condition and have some emergency food and water in case there is a problem. The desert can get very hot midday (even in September) and very cold overnight.
It's a good idea to leave early. If you leave around 6 AM, you'll get to Las Vegas around 10:00 to 10:30 AM. If you leave later, it'll add up to an hour to your trip.
It's possible to do the round trip in one day, but that's at least 8 hours of driving in one day. You might want to consider staying in Las Vegas overnight and driving back in the morning, so you don't have to drive in the dark when you're tired.
Google Maps and other map services can give a good estimate of how much additional travel time you will need depending on when your trip starts.

@jimpjorps Do you think it should be fine for me to leave around 6am to drive to Las Vegas? I'm thinking of driving back no later than 7pm.

It's definitely possible. Like I said, it's a lot of driving in one day, but you'd still have about 7 or 8 hours in Las Vegas for sightseeing.

It'd depend on what you'd want to see there. For example, it'd be enough time to see every casino on the Strip and have a nice meal somewhere, but you'd want more time if you want to see a show like Cirque du Soleil or David Copperfield, or go to other parts of Las Vegas besides the Strip.
