laughing blue eyes and is of a nervous temperament He was born in Wisconsin June 14 1855 He graduated from the Wisconsin State University in 1879 and received the degree LL from the same institution in 1901 He was admitted to the bar in 1880 He served as district attorney from 1880 to 1884 in Dane County Member of Congress 1885-1891 As a member of the Ways and Means Committee he took a prominent part in framing the McKinley Bill Early he was a leader of a movement in Wisconsin to nominate all candidates by a direct vote This policy was adopted by his state in 1904 He was a leader of the movement to tax railroad property by the same system and at the same rate as other property This was adopted by his state in 1903 He also fought for the control of railway rates within the state by a commission This was adopted by Wisconsin in 1905 In all of these reform movements he was the constant mark of all the railroad influence in his state They hated him as they have hated no other man in the history of Wisconsin In 1901 he was elected governor of Wisconsin in the most spectacular political campaign in the history of the state He held this office till 1905 when he was elected to the United States Senate Since going into that august body he has won the sincere hatred of the old time senators by his independent fearless fight against corruption in every form In 1903 he began work on the lecture platform and at once won such popularity that he now commands $200 a night for every single date of his time he can spare To the intelligent student of civic reform and political purity
