Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the U.S. Air Force have partnered in a new venture to boost the trauma capabilities of active duty trauma surgeons although simultaneously supporting the greater Tampa community with skilled surgical care. “Mission Zero” is a program sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response that provides administrative funding to ensure medical readiness by integrating military care providers into civilian trauma centers. These providers often have experience in austere and combat settings that can be shared with their civilian counterparts and applied to the unique medical challenges found in natural disasters and mass casualties as well as penetrating and blunt force trauma.

Two active duty Air Force trauma surgeons are now credentialed and on the medical staff at TGH. They will be fully integrated members of the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery as attending trauma surgeons. Additionally, they will receive academic appointments at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and serve as educators to over 40 surgery residents and 4 trauma surgery fellows.
